Sculptra is a different way of restoring volume. Where hyaluronic acid filler adds volume directly, Sculptra prompts your skin to build its own — slowly, over months, and with results that last considerably longer. For people who want a gradual, natural-looking improvement rather than an instant change, it is often the better choice. At ELM Aesthetics Sculptra is carried out by Melody Steel, a Nurse Prescriber with over 19 years’ experience and a background in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery unit at St James’s Hospital.
How it works
Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible material that has been used in medicine for decades. Injected into the deeper layers of the skin, it acts as a scaffold that stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen. Over the following weeks and months, as the PLLA is gradually absorbed, the new collagen remains — restoring volume, firmness and skin thickness from within.
Who it suits
- Generalised volume loss across the face — hollowing of the cheeks, temples and mid-face
- Thinning, sagging or loss of firmness in the skin itself
- People who prefer a gradual, understated change over an immediate one
- Anyone wanting longer-lasting results than hyaluronic acid filler alone
- Selected body areas, such as the buttocks or upper arms, assessed individually
What to expect
Three to six vials are typically required across a course, with sessions spaced around eight weeks apart. The product contains local anaesthetic and is placed with a cannula. Immediately afterwards the area looks fuller because of the water in the injection — this settles within a few days, after which the true result develops gradually over three to six months as collagen forms. Massaging the area for five minutes, five times a day, for five days after each session is an important part of the aftercare.
Honest limitations
Sculptra is not instant, and it is not the right choice for someone wanting to see a result before an event next month. It cannot be dissolved like hyaluronic acid filler, which makes practitioner experience especially important. Small nodules are an uncommon risk, reduced by correct technique and diligent massage. Results vary from person to person and typically last two years or more once developed.

Your questions answered
How is Sculptra different from filler?
Filler adds volume directly and is visible immediately. Sculptra stimulates your own collagen over months, so the result develops gradually and lasts longer — up to two years or more.
When will I see results?
The immediate fullness after treatment is water and settles in days. The real result builds over three to six months, and continues to improve across the course.
How many sessions do I need?
Typically two or three sessions around eight weeks apart, using three to six vials in total depending on the degree of volume loss.
Why the massage aftercare?
Massaging the area — five minutes, five times a day, for five days — helps distribute the product evenly and reduces the small risk of nodules.
Can it be reversed?
No. Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, Sculptra cannot be dissolved, which is why it should be carried out by an experienced practitioner with a conservative approach.
