Microneedling works by creating thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin, triggering its natural wound-healing response — new collagen, new elastin, and a genuine improvement in texture, tone and firmness. At ELM Aesthetics we offer two forms of treatment, carried out by Georgia Abrams, Skin & Laser Therapist (Level 3 qualified), or by Melody Steel. Both practitioners are fully insured.

RF Microneedling

Radiofrequency microneedling adds heat to the mechanism. Insulated needles create micro-channels while delivering radiofrequency energy into the deeper dermis, where it stimulates collagen production and contracts existing fibres. The combination is markedly more powerful than needling alone — particularly for skin tightening, acne scarring, enlarged pores and deeper lines. It is the treatment of choice where structure and firmness are the concern.

Dr Pen Professional

Dr Pen is a precision automated needling device used with a targeted serum — a choice of Whitening (for pigmentation), Peptides (for repair and firmness), Hyaluronic Acid (for hydration) or Retinol (for texture and turnover) — driven into the skin through the micro-channels for far greater effect than topical application. It suits texture, dullness, fine lines, mild scarring and general skin health, with a lighter recovery than RF. The serum is chosen for your skin on the day, and can be changed between sessions.

Who it suits

  • Acne scarring and uneven texture
  • Enlarged pores and oily, congested skin
  • Fine lines and early laxity
  • Dull, tired skin lacking radiance
  • Pigmentation and sun damage (with the appropriate serum)

What to expect

Numbing cream is applied for around 20 to 30 minutes, then the treatment itself takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on the area and device. Expect redness similar to sunburn for one to three days (a little longer with RF), sometimes with mild swelling or dryness. Results build over four to six weeks as collagen forms. A course of three sessions, four to six weeks apart, gives the best results; RF courses are priced accordingly.

Honest limitations

Microneedling improves the skin; it does not replace lost volume, relax expression lines or lift significant laxity. Deep, pitted scarring improves but rarely disappears entirely. Results vary from person to person, and active acne, certain skin conditions and recent sun exposure may mean postponing treatment.

Your questions answered

RF microneedling or Dr Pen — which do I need?

RF is the stronger option for tightening, acne scarring, pores and deeper lines. Dr Pen with serum suits texture, tone, hydration and general skin health, with a lighter recovery. We will recommend at consultation.

Does microneedling hurt?

Numbing cream is applied beforehand. Most people describe a prickling or warm sensation; RF is warmer than Dr Pen.

How long is the downtime?

Redness like a mild sunburn for one to three days, occasionally slightly longer with RF. Makeup can usually be worn from the following day.

How many sessions will I need?

A course of three, four to six weeks apart, is standard. Scarring may benefit from more.

Can it be done on dark skin?

Yes — microneedling is suitable for all skin types, and RF with insulated needles is particularly safe for darker skin, unlike some laser treatments.
